Signing Ceremony for MoU with Danish Patent and Trademark Office (DKPTO)

BruIPO and Denmark Patent and Trademark Office (DKPTO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 29 August for a referral arrangement of substantive search and examination of patents.  DKPTO has been acting as BruIPO’s examiner since the implementation of the indigenous patent system in Brunei Darussalam in 2012 and the signing ceremony signified the continuation of collaborative efforts between the two Offices in the area of patents for a further period of five years.  BruIPO was represented by Awang Haji Mohammad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, Permanent Secretary (Industry) at the Prime Minister's Office as Registrar, whilst DKPTO was represented by Mr Keld Nymann Jensen, Deputy Director General.  Witnessing the occasion was Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hamdan bin Haji Abu Bakar in his capacity as the Acting Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Signing Ceremony Between BruIPO and Japan Patent Office (JPO) on Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH+)

BruIPO signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) on Patent Prosecution Highway Plus (PPH+) with the Japan Patent Office (JPO) on 28 August to kickstart a new patent examination cooperation initiative called the ‘Patent Prosecution Highway Plus (PPH+)’. BruIPO was represented by Awang Haji Mohammad Azmi bin Haji Mohd Hanifah, Permanent Secretary (Industry) at the Prime Minister's Office as Registrar, whilst JPO was represented by its Deputy Commissioner, Mr Kunihiko Shimano. The ceremony was witnessed by His Excellency Mr Motohiko Kato, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan and Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hamdan bin Haji Abu Bakar in his capacity as the Acting Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister's Office.

A patent is a right granted to the owner of an invention to prevent others from making, using, importing or selling the invention without his permission. A patentable invention can be a product or a process that gives a new technical solution to a problem. It can also be a new method of doing things, the composition of a new product, or a technical improvement on how certain objects work.

A trademark is a sign or symbol used to distinguish goods and services of one traider from another and therefore must not be a sign that traders may wish to use to promote or describe their goods or services

An Industrial Design is the features of shape, configuration, pattern or ornament which when applied to an article gives the article unique appearance. It does not include a method or principles of contruction

Protection is given to plant breeders for the unique combination of genes created in a new plant "variety" when set conditions are met after the examination of the seed

ASPEC

Launched in 2009, the ASPEC Programme provides for the sharing of search and examination results amongst the participating ASEAN Offices. This would reduce duplication on the search and examination work, thereby facilitating applicants in obtaining corresponding patents faster and more efficiently.​
